“The Magic Fountain”

Lights? What could be so interesting about them? Nothing really…or so we thought.

Early last year I was lucky enough to travel the world with three of my best friends. First stop Barcelona.

*Cabin crew and passengers please prepare for landing*

We had one rule no complaining. We look at each other semi smiling but the pain was written all over our faces as we lugged our 18kg backpacks up the stairs into the apartment. Of course I chose the bag without wheels. Flustered and hot we lay draped over the couch and simultaneously say ‘I am so so tired.’ Rule one already broken.

Unpacking our bags, we read the first things on our itinerary list ‘go see the Barcelona lights aka ‘The Magic fountain.’ Although thoroughly recommended by friends and family we weren’t to phased about seeing a light show… we giggle. I mean what could be so special about a light show? Hesitant to leave our air conditioned apartment we decide to brave the humidity and wonder slowly towards the fountain reaching it just after dusk.

Standing on our tiptoes, hands on each other shoulders stabilising our balance the show is about to begin. The lights turn on. Left, right and centre the fountain begins to spurt out colourful water.

We are absolutely MINDBLOWN.

It was like the Aurora lights. The combination of lights, music and atmosphere created an overwhelming wave of energy in the crowd it was something I had never experienced before. I felt euphoric. Exceeding all expectations, it was a rippled effect, you didn’t need to ask a single person how they felt it was written across their face. The thousands of bodies spiralled around, eyes fixated on the fountain it starts to bucket down with rain, not one person runs for cover. We were all truly mesmerised.

After the lights stop not a single word is spoken but we could still feel the high spirits of everyone in the audience. Looking back to that day we all agree it was the highlight of our trip. To think sharing such a simplistic experience with others could be so beautiful and rewarding.

Remember to listen to your parents, they always seem to be right!
